LINK Internship at 81301 Coffee House
LINK is a 3-week long internship where the entire junior class at Animas High School embarks on their own internship. Our goal was to see and learn about jobs that we are potentially interested in doing in the future. A lot of people stayed in town and went to local businesses. But some people went to places like Alaska, New York, and many other places. I decided to stay local and go intern at 81301 Coffee House.
Coming into this internship I had a lot of customer service experience from other jobs. For example, they had me working a register which includes talking to a lot of people so having that experience helped a lot in those situations. While, I was there I learned about the coffee bean roasting process and my mentor walked me through step by step of how to work the roaster. Along this I learned how to barista, and how wholesale deliveries work. For my project however I was tasked with making a T-shirt design for Easy Coffee Roasters which is their sub brand in which they sell wholesale coffee beans. A skill that I learned that I believe could help me in the future would be learning how to barista. With this skill I can work at any coffee shop. One challenge that I had was overcoming the task of learning how to use Adobe Illustrator for graphic design because I had never really used that program before. I believe that I contributed to 81301 in many ways such as making design for t-shirts, helping roast coffee, and just helping out in what ever way I could. 81301 should consider having more high schoolers internship at their business. Working at a coffee shop includes very early hours which could be a challenge for a lot of people, but for me I figured out that I enjoy working early hours over later hours, this allows me to get everything done early and still have a lot of time in the day and night to do whatever I please. Overall, I had a great experience working with 81301 and I now know that working in or potentially owning a coffee shop would be something I want to do in the future.
